The Freedom Ride

A Four Part Devotional Through Black History

Introduction

In 1961 the United States Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) launched the Freedom Rides to challenge segregation on interstate buses and bus terminals. These rides were critical during the Civil Rights Movement and even today remain rich with gems, lessons, and teachings. What follows is a four part devotional that traces through the historic Freedom Rides. I invite you to take your time, buckle up, and prepare to journey through scripture. So how about we get started, I hope you enjoy the ride…

  • Part One - Hearing the Cry

In Exodus, a man named Moses got attuned to a cry. As we begin our journeys I invite you to consider what God might be attuning your ears to. Can you hear the cry? How might he want you to respond?

  • Part Two - Starting the Journey

Aware of the cry, it’s time to take action. For what’s the point in hearing, if action and obedience never follows. If you haven’t started moving yet, it’s time to get going. What is preventing you from getting the journey going?

  • Part Three - Facing Adversity

While on the way to Birmingham, the Freedom Riders were faced with adversity. An enemy was committed to stopping their journey. Thus, how do we respond in the face of hardship? How do we suffer well in the face of adversity?

  • Part Four - Finishing the Work

After facing the hardship, I encourage you to finish the work. Keep on keeping on, the results are worth it. Don’t take the shortcut, you can get to the finish line!
